Mabel
Mabel appeared in her late teens with the 2015 single "Know Me Better," a yearning and moody piece of breakbeat soul that belied her age. Within only two years, she was on major-label Polydor with her commercial breakthrough, the Top Ten U.K. hit "Finders Keepers," leading to High Expectations, her similarly successful 2019 debut album, a 2020 Brit Award for British Female Solo Artist, and several returns to the upper reaches of the U.K. singles chart. She released her sophomore LP in 2022, which included the single "Good Luck." A thoughtful songwriter and dynamic singer with an R&B foundation and consistent pop appeal, her natural stylistic range extends to numerous strains of dance music.
Born in Spain and raised in London and Sweden, Mabel (Mabel Alabama-Pearl McVey) showed a deep interest in music during early childhood and studied music production. Her parents, Neneh Cherry and Cameron McVey, didn't know that she was writing music until she was 16. Before she turned 20, she uploaded her debut single, "Know Me Better." Subsequently signed to Polydor, Mabel had her second single, "My Boy My Town," out by the end of 2015. Shortly after that, she was nominated in the BBC Sound of 2016 poll. In 2017, she delivered the Bedroom EP, featuring the multi-platinum number eight hit "Finders Keepers," and the mixtape Ivy to Roses. The next year, she opened for Harry Styles on a European tour and as a headliner, and charted with four singles, nearly reaching the Top Ten again with "Fine Line" and "Ring Ring," hits that appeared on an expanded edition of Ivy to Roses issued in January 2019.
Seven months later, Mabel entered the U.K. albums chart at number three with High Expectations, a full-length boasting the Top Ten singles "Don't Call Me Up" and "Mad Love." The album led to Mabel winning a 2020 Brit Award in the category of British Female Solo Artist. A disparate trio of 2020 Top Ten hits, "Boyfriend," "West Ten," and "Tick Tock," were included on an expanded digital version of the album. Additional singles such as "Take It Home" and the number 38 hit "Let Them Know" arrived in 2021. She teamed up with British DJ Jax Jones and Swedish duo Galantis in early 2022 for the single "Good Luck."
