Los Caliz

Los Caliz ("The Chalice") is a norteño sierreño group based in Sultana del Norte Monterrey, Nuevo León, fronted by singer/songwriters and siblings Carlos (lead) and Sebastian Mendoza (second voice). Their sound differs from the traditional sierreño style in several ways; for starters they often appear not as a trio of guitar, accordion, and voice, but as a quartet and sometimes even a quintet. Their lineup also includes guitarist/requintero Alex Barbosa, and tuba player Fabian Breseno. Since releasing "Te Perdono," their debut single in 2019, they have innovated on the traditional folk forms that are at the base of their music by adding layers of organic and sometimes synthetic percussion. Another 2019 single, "¿Quién de Los Dos?" scandalized radio DJs yet drew in millions of delighted listeners by employing bachata rhythms and electronic overdubs in post-production. Since then, they've grafted textures from banda and tropical pop onto their romanticos and corridos, balanced by rural norteño sierreno. In early 2020, they issued "No Soy Como Tu" to international acclaim with synth-ed accordion and keyboards, drum loops, and samples. The Mendoza brothers hail from Urupan, Michoacan. Encouraged by their father, they listened to traditional music from norteño sierreño to mariachi and all styles in between from his vast record collection. He also told them about their grandfather, whom they had never met (he passed when their dad was 10), an amateur musician who carried his guitar everywhere. Their father not only regaled them with tales of his musical exploits, but also played his young sons recordings of the traditional songs from the same repertoire their grandfather played. They began writing in their early teens after relocating to Sultana del Norte Monterrey, in Nuevo León. They met first requinto guitarist, McAllen, Texas' Alejandro Hernandéz, in a music store; after a conversation and playing some songs together, they asked him to join the band. A few weeks later they recruited local conguero Orlando Garza and tuba player Hugo Alberto Moreno. This early version of the group played local festivals and street parties and began to issue songs and videos to social media. Local promoters picked up on their sound and enlisted them, just months after forming, to open concerts for national figures including El Fantasma (Alexander García). By mid-2019, their lineup had shifted: Hernandéz returned to Texas, the Mendoza brothers took over the percussion duties (while songwriter Carlos also added tuba and second guitar), and Moreno left for another band only to be replaced by Breseno. Their debut single, "Te Perdono," on the Warner Bros.-distributed independent Piedras de Lumbre, surprised both listeners and industry professionals alike with its congas and bells, while the melody reflected traditional sierreño. They raised more than a few eyebrows with the single "¿Quién de Los Dos?" by wedding organic and programmed bachata rhythms, layered, Auto-Tuned backing vocals, and organic guitars and upright bass with a classic folk melody. The band's video for the track netted more than 650 thousand views while the track registered on charts across the streaming spectrum. Los Caliz had actually become a Mexican radio staple by the time they released the February video for "Los Fletes," a traditional narcocorrido recorded in collaboration with Colmillo Norteno. Three weeks later they followed it with the pop-flavored bachata-tinged "No Soy Como Tu." The video registered millions of views and propelled the track onto the streaming charts. In early July, they collaborated with Pancho Uresti on his hit single "Aventé La Mochila," and three weeks later, they registered another hit narcocorrido in "El Maniaco." Written and orchestrated by 20-year-old Carlos, it received millions of views, but also generated debate among critics and listeners, given Sebastian's young age (18) and the graphic violence in its video. In preparation for their debut album, the group switched up their sound again in October with "Me Prometí" a funky, midtempo meld of percussive bachata and lushly romantic sierreño; its video garnered more than a million views within its first month of release, propelling it onto the Mexican Regional streaming charts.
