Horrendous
Philadelphia's Horrendous employ a lethal mix of uncompromising grindcore and black, doom, thrash, and progressive death metal. The group's 2012 debut, The Chills, was rooted in traditional death metal. Subsequent efforts, including Ecdysis (2014) and Idol (2018), adopted a more progressive approach, eliciting comparisons to American death metal pioneers Death. Horrendous continued to refine their sound on 2023's Ontological Mysterium, matching sonic might with technical prowess.
Founded in 2009 by guitarist/vocalist Damian Herring, drummer Jamie Knox, guitarist/vocalist Matt Knox, and bassist Alex Kulick, the quartet's shared love for classic old-school death metal yielded the Sweet Blasphemies demo, which helped land the group a record deal with Dark Descent. The band's debut studio album, the trad-death metal-leaning Chills, arrived in 2012, followed by the more progressive-minded Ecdysis (2014) and Anareta (2015), the latter of which found its way onto a host of critics' year-end lists. Horrendous moved to Season of Mist for their fourth studio long-player, 2018's punishing and critically acclaimed Idol. 2023's Ontological Mysterium saw the band pair the quickfire death metal of their debut with the neck-snapping technical mastery of more recent efforts.
