DMA'S
Taking cues from the Manchester rave scene of the early '90s, Sydney, Australia indie trio DMA's combine layers of guitar textures and soaring, wistful melodies in a sound that recalls the best moments of greats like Oasis and Primal Scream. The three songwriters created hits right from the start. Their self-titled EP included the dreamy acoustic single "Delete," and they broke into the Aussie charts with subsequent releases like 2018's For Now and 2020's The Glow, which also found favor with Dutch, U.K., and U.S. audiences. The group's fourth studio album, How Many Dreams?, arrived in 2023 after the band had sifted through over 70 demos to decide on the 12 tracks that made the final cut.
DMA's formed in 2012 when Johnny Took and Tommy O'Dell -- members of the local rock band Underlights -- started writing songs with guitarist Matt Mason. They quickly signed to the tiny label I Oh You on the strength of their home-recorded demos, and before long, their debut single, "Delete," climbed the charts and garnered praise from the press, musical peers, and a growing fan base. The group's self-titled debut EP surfaced in the summer of 2014, and in early 2016 they issued their debut full-length, Hills End. Late 2017 and early 2018 saw the release of the singles "Dawning," "In the Air," and "For Now" ahead of the arrival of their sophomore full-length effort, also titled For Now, later that April.
In 2019, DMA's released their first live album, MTV Unplugged Live, which captured one of the group's sets at the Melbourne Memo Music Hall in 2018. They returned in 2020 with their third studio album The Glow, previewed by the singles "Silver" and "Life Is a Game of Changing." A month before the record's late April release date, the band issued a new version of "Life Is a Game of Changing" remixed by electronic legends Orbital. While continuing the anthemic choruses and stadium-filler sonics of their previous work, The Glow leaned even harder into their penchant for '90s rave production.
Directly following the time connected to The Glow, DMA's struggled with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic along with the rest of the world. Released in March of 2021, Live at Brixton documented one of the band's final shows before live music stopped due to the spread of the pandemic. In August of 2021, they released the self-produced EP I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going to Miss You. The four-song project represented a back-to-basics approach from the band. After many years of work, their fourth studio album, How Many Dreams?, arrived in March of 2023. The album was comprised of songs they wrote while waiting out the lockdowns of the pandemic, as well as songs that had been in the works since the band first formed.
