Catcall
Catcall is an electro-pop alias of Catherine Kelleher, a stylish singer from Sydney, Australia, who first established herself as the frontwoman of the indie rock trio Kiosk. After a few years in Kiosk, including a tour as the opening act for the Gossip, Kelleher began recording solo as Catcall in 2007. Collaborating chiefly with producer Crumbs (i.e., drummer Max Kohane of the band Agents of Abhorrence), she recorded a series of demos, some of which circulated on the Internet to early acclaim, and ultimately made her official recording debut in 2008 with the five-track EP Anniversary. Released by the independent label Instant Touch Recordings, the EP most notably features "August," an emotional song written on the anniversary of her father's death. In support of the EP, Kelleher toured internationally with her DJ, Sleater Brockman, and filmed a video for "August." Frequently compared to M.I.A. and Santogold, Catcall quickly became a blogosphere favorite.
