Ailee

The stage name of Amy Lee, Ailee, often referred to as the "Korean Beyonce," is an award-winning Korean-American singer and songwriter with a powerful voice, commanding stage presences, and an engaging sound that draws from both Western and Eastern pop styles. Born in Denver, Colorado, and raised in New Jersey, Ailee spent her formative years listening to Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, Rihanna, and Janet Jackson, all of whom she cites as influences. She developed an online following in 2006 after posting a series of self-made videos, and two years later appeared on the Maury Povich-hosted NBC singing competition The Maury Show, where she placed second. In 2010, Ailee moved to South Korea and joined YMC Entertainment, where she spent the next two years featuring and performing. She made her official debut in early 2012 with the release of the single "Heaven," which appeared on that October's Invitation EP -- that same year saw Ailee make her acting debut, appearing in the KBS television drama Dream High 2. The aptly named Invitation did well, earning multiple awards, but it was her sophomore EP that would make Ailee a K-pop sensation. Released in 2013, A's Doll House featured the smash-hit single "U&I," which debuted at number one on the Gaon singles chart -- stores were unable to keep the EP in stock. That same year marked the release of "Heaven" in Japan. 2014's Magazine saw Ailee take greater artistic control of her career, co-writing four of the five tracks, including the chart-topping single "Don't Touch Me." 2015 proved to be another big year, with Ailee performing her first solo concert (at Seoul Olympic Park's Gymnastics Stadium) and releasing her first full-length effort, Vivid. The LP included the high-energy hit single "Mind Your Own Business." The 2016 EP A New Empire also found success, this time on the strength of the hit single "Home," which featured rapper and singer Mi Rae Yoon from Korean hip-hop group MFBTY. In January 2017, Ailee issued the ballad "I Will Go to You Like the First Snow," which would go on to become her signature song, as well as one of the most beloved and popular Korean pop singles of all time. Two years later, she returned with her second studio long-player, Butterfly, which featured the fiery, club-ready single "Room Shaker." That same year, she announced that she was leaving YMC and signing a contract with Rocket3 Entertainment, and later that December she released her first English-language single, "Sweater," via American label Sun and Sky Records.
