Invited to be the artist-in-residence for the 2017 edition of the Detroit Festival, saxophonist Wayne Shorter had initially envisaged forming an all-female quartet for the occasion, hoping to be joined by pianist Geri Allen, double bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. However, Allen's untimely death in June of that year decided otherwise. The Argentine Leo Genovese (one of Esperanza Spalding's favourite collaborators) eventually took over the piano during the quartet's exceptional concert on the 3rd of September. Something that stands out as soon as you listen to the record is how naturally Shorter manages to impose his signature sound in just a few bars. He leads his fellow musicians through meandering, weightless compositions that possess a bewitching charm (‘Endangered Species’, ‘Midnight In Carlotta’s Hair’). He also explores the radically different worlds of Milton Nascimento (‘Encontros e Despedidas’) and Geri Allen (‘Drummers Song’), transforming them into something new with his cottony improvisations and their unpredictable yet always poetic tangents. Shorter dazzles with his unique ability to create totally free music, as if devoid of even the smallest premeditation. His music is made in the moment, taking shape in the continuous flow of a truly collective discourse. At 89 years old and no longer in good health, Wayne Shorter will no longer perform on stage, making this album all the more essential. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
