Mason's work is the result of an intensive exchange with the musicians of Ensemble Recherche. He leaves the Well-Tempered Sound to let floating states arise and disappear. At the tonal center is the piano, with an enraptured mood that appears like a flicker above the sounds of the ensemble. Mason works four-dimensionally with space and time. Sounds move along their paths like meteors, fade away and dive into infinity. He composes sounds, noises and spaces in the course of time. At the end of the piece, the cello is left all alone, lost in an ecstatic semi-improvisation, while the other instruments wistfully penetrate into the distance. © Winter and Winter

Vincente Baset, a composer from Madrid born in 1719, wrote music that sounds like Antonio Vivaldi’s compositions the first time you hear it. But if you listen more closely, you notice all the eccentric touches and harmonies. This is a world premiere of eleven symphonies (Oberturas y Sinfonias) unearthed by Aarón Zapico and the amazing Forma Antiqva ensemble.Vincente Baset’s typically baroque music is full of theatrical effects, interruptions, and at times incongruities. It requires a great deal of imagination and at the same time it gives the performers free rein. Not much is known about this composer, though he must have been hot-headed. There are criminal charges against him in his hometown of Valencia, where he was involved in a brawl. He was found with his head bandaged, his shirt splattered with blood and covered with mud following a sword fight. As both a violinist and composer, he was a member of the Royal Orchestra during the great festivities organised for the court by Farinelli. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Hi-Res Booklet
A cellist in the orchestra of the San Petronio Basilica in Bologna, Domenico Gabrielli (1659-1690), was no relation to the Gabrieli of Venice, and is the author of a series of Ricercari for solo cello, the first pieces discovered for this instrument which was slowly separating itself out from the viola da gamba. Written in 1689 (Bach was four at the time), these Ricercari are striking for their freedom of invention and their fantasy. Traversing the beautiful Sicilian countryside listening to this spellbinding music, viola player Christophe Desjardins decided to appropriate these pieces and re-transcribe them for his instrument. Fascinated by the timeless modernity of these pages, he suggested that his friend the Italian composer Ivan Fedele write a kind of echo across the centuries that could reach out to these Ricercari, taking in some of Gabrielli's figures and mannerisms. Fedele rose to the occasion with five Ritrovari (roughly "rediscoveries") in an attempt to creatively renew the emotions of an inward journey. © François Hudry/Qobuz
