Wu Bai – born Wu Chun-lin on January 14, 1968, in Chiayi, Taiwan – is the vocalist, guitarist, and leader of Wu Bai & China Blue and is one of the most popular Mandarin-language pop and rock stars in East and Southeast Asia. While most of his success has come from his homeland, he’s also beloved in countries such as Japan, the US, Australia, Canada, and Ireland. Inspired by classic rock artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, Wu Bai is known for both his chart-topping albums and his incendiary live performances, which have earned him the nickname ‘King of Live Music.’ After working menial jobs and playing in different bands in the 1980s, Wu Bai joined forces with drummer Dean Zavolta and formed Wu Bai & China Blue. They made their commercial debut with music featured on the soundtrack to the 1992 motion picture Dust of Angels. Wu Bai and the group achieved great critical and commercial success in 1996 with the album The End of Love, which featured the singles “Last Dance” and “Norwegian Forest.” The album Lonely Tree, Lonely Bird was honored with an Album of the Year award at the 10th Golden Melody Award in 1999. Wu Bai branched out into acting with roles in the films A Beautiful New World (1998), The Personals (19993), New Police Story (2004) and Mrs. K (2016) and sang the theme song to the motion picture Legend of the Sacred Stone (2000). Wu Bai and his band have continued to remain one of Taiwan’s biggest bands with albums such as Bridge of Tears (2003), Space Bomb (2008), Endless Shining Sorrow (2013), and Let the Water Flow Backwards (2019).
