Tobi
The affably voiced TOBi is an introspective and emotionally unguarded rapper/singer from Canada via Nigeria. Arriving in 2016 with the self-released FYi EP, he signed a deal with RCA and made his label debut three years later with Still. Having been unreliant on the signal-boosting strategy of incorporating high-profile artist features, TOBi has since collaborated more frequently. His 2020 sophomore album Elements, Vol. 1 featured the likes of Sango, Loony, and Harrison, and the promotional campaign ahead of 2023's Panic -- a set with lyrical themes ranging from social consciousness to sensuality -- involved singles on which he was assisted by Mavi and Topaz Jones.
Born in Lagos and a native of Canada since an early childhood move to Ottawa, Ontario, Oluwatobi Feyisara Ajibolade developed an interest in music as a youngster and began to use the art form as a way to channel his emotions. His commercial recorded debut as TOBi was made in 2016 with FYi, released by the Sony-supported upstart label Same Plate Music. The EP featured the assertive single "Deeper" and "Don't Wanna Think," a bluesy Kweku Collins collaboration. A handful of singles scattered over 2017 and 2018 -- while TOBi juggled collegiate studies in behavioral and natural science -- led to the 2019 release of his debut album, STILL, also issued by Same Plate. The LP was highlighted by the gripping single "City Blues" and featured only VanJess as a guest artist. This course was reversed somewhat when the album was re-released in deluxe form the next year as STILL+, which included new songs and remixes, along with featured appearances from Shad, the Game, and Kemba, among others.
Later in 2020, TOBi returned with his second album, Elements, Vol. 1, a more collaborative set highlighted by the kicked-back "Beige" and triumphant "Made Me Everything." From there, TOBi issued several singles or remixes of earlier songs with new performances from other artists. These included a 2021 remix of the Elements, Vol. 1 track "Family Matters" (featuring Flo Milli) and the R&B-flavored "Come as You Are" (with Baby Rose). TOBi inched toward his next album in 2022 and early 2023 with singles such as "Too Hot," "Move" (recorded for the soundtrack of Do Revenge), and "She Loves Me," followed by "Flowers" (featuring Mavi) and "All Night Long" (with Topaz Jones).
