The Philharmonic Brass

The Philharmonic Brass, which also features percussion, includes members of the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as players from other groups. The group released its debut album in 2024. The Philharmonic Brass was formed by Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic players who both wanted to draw on the long tradition of vernacular brass playing in their respective cities and to create a new listening experience. The group should not be confused with an ensemble called Philharmonic Brass, active in the 1980s and '90s; that group, no longer active, did not use a definite article with its name, whereas the new group goes by The Philharmonic Brass (apparently using the English name even in non-anglophone markets). The ensemble comprises seven trumpeters, two French hornists, two Vienna hornists (a horn with a double-cylinder valve mechanism unique to Vienna), four trombonists, two tuba players, and four percussionists. The majority are from the Berlin Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic, but the group also includes players from the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, Italy's Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the faculties of the Hochschule für Musik Hamburg, Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, and the Hochschule für Musik München. The Philharmonic Brass gave its debut concert at the Musikverein in Vienna in April of 2023. The group's repertory ranges from Bach to John Williams, rendered in new arrangements tailored to the abilities of individual players in the group. The conductor of The Philharmonic Brass is Tugan Sokhiev; the group has also announced the intention to collaborate with other conductors associated with the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras. Signed to the Decca label, The Philharmonic Brass released its debut album, Overture!, in 2024, with Sokhiev as conductor. In the spring of that year, the group had dates booked at the Lisztzentrum in Raiding, the Musikzentrum and Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg, and the Koncerthaus in Klagenfurt, all in Austria. The Philharmonic Brass operates a Youth Development Program, offering scholarships, coaching, and private lessons to young musicians.
