The Moxie Strings

The genre-crossing music of The Moxie Strings reached the top of U.S. classical crossover charts in the summer of 2022. In addition to performance and recording, the group's work also has a strong educational component. The Moxie Strings was formed in Michigan in 2007. They exemplify a genre known in the U.S. as chamber folk, which adds classical influences to eclectic folk sounds; the genre also exists in the U.K. and in continental Europe, for instance, in the work of fiddler Alasdair Fraser and cellist Natalie Haas, but is less cohesive there. The Moxie Strings are difficult to categorize generically, but there has often been an aspect of classical music in their work, and they acquired that during their musical educations. Fiddler Diana Ladio and cellist Alison Lynn both hold bachelor's degrees in music performance and music education, as does percussionist Fritz McGirr, with whom the duo often performs. Each of the musicians has an independent career; Ladio is the fiddler for the touring Irish band The Elders, while Lynn has performed with Kanye West and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, among other musicians. The Moxie Strings issued their debut album, Running in Squares, on their own label in 2014. In addition to conventional instruments, Ladio plays a five-string violin and Lynn an electric cello of her own invention, and both players use audio effects pedals. The group's music has influences from Celtic, Canadian, bluegrass, rock, jazz, and old-time music, in addition to classical music. The Moxie Strings have performed widely at rock and folk venues, festivals (especially those devoted to Irish music), and educational venues. Education is a major part of The Moxie Strings' mission; the group holds clinics for young people, emphasizing musical self-discovery and socially and culturally relevant genres of music. The group has taught clinics in more than 200 schools throughout the U.S. and has presented their methods at music education conferences. The Moxie Strings released the album Outlet in 2016. They returned in 2022 with Live & Plugged In, which reached the number one position on Billboard magazine's U.S. classical crossover chart.
