Songer

Gaining recognition after a standout performance on the U.K. platform Bl@ckbox, Reading-based rapper Songer emerged in the late 2010s with brand of U.K. rap heavy on the wordplay; he solidified his place in rap culture with a steady string of albums. Born and raised in Wokingham, England, Songer shattered expectations with his debut appearance on U.K. freestyle series Bl@ckbox, appearing on Season 12 (2017) of the show at the age of 17. Impressing diehards with a relentless flow and layered wordplay, he was invited back for Season 13 a year later, and his appearance rapidly became the second most-viewed in the show's history -- second only to Dave. His freestyle work soon progressed into studio sessions: his debut EP, Times Two, arrived that February ahead of his debut album, Dream Workz, in December 2019. Though initially focused on hedonistic lyrics, he went in more complex directions on his second and third LPs, Lyrics for Sanity (2020) and The Sunrise Project (2021), including more sample-heavy and trap-based instrumentals. In 2022, he appeared on Vibe Chemistry's drum'n'bass anthem "Balling" alongside Mr Traumatik, Devilman, and OneDa, before returning to Bl@ckbox for a victory lap with "The Sunrise Session" as part of their five-million-subscriber celebration. The rollout for his fourth album, SKALA, began in 2023 with "04:59," featuring grime legend D Double E, followed shortly by lo-fi drill "Golden (Soul Food)." The full LP arrived in April that year, primarily focused on trap with brief ventures into drum'n'bass, Michigan rap, and drill.
