Son de Madera
Son de Madera are a Mexican folk group from Xalapa, Veracruz, who specialize in son jarocho, a folk style native to the region. In addition to numerous full-length album releases, the group has performed at folk music festivals throughout the world. Founded in 1992 in Xalapa, the capital city of the Mexican state of Veracruz, Son de Madera are led by guitarist Ramón Gutiérrez Hernández, who had performed in the son jarocho group Mono Blanco with his brother prior to founding a group of his own. Son de Madera made their full-length debut in 1998 with an eponymous album released on the Urtext Records label. The group's second album, Raíces (2000), was a self-released effort. Third album Las Orquestas del Día (2004) was also self-released, though it was later licensed for re-release by the Moondo label in 2006. Following a growing number of folk festival performances throughout the world, Son de Madera released the album Son de Mi Tierra (2009) in association with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.
