Redlight King
Led by Canadian singer/songwriter Mark Kasprzyk, Redlight King specialize in highly emotive, soul-searching songs with anthemic choruses a common ingredient. The Los Angeles-based band hit the ground running with Something for the Pain (2011), scoring hits on the rock and alternative charts in their home country and the U.S. with the album's first two singles, "Old Man" and "Bullet in My Hand." After the release of their similarly successful Irons in the Fire (2013), Redlight King took a lengthy break but returned at the start of the next decade to deliver Moonshine (2020), followed by In Our Blood (2023). While they've incorporated hip-hop and dance and roots music, Redlight King have been essentially a hard rock band all along.
Before he formed Redlight King, Hamilton, Ontario native Mark Kasprzyk recorded in the 2000s under the name Kazzer, releasing his debut album in Canada and Europe through major label Epic. Near the end of the decade, he and Julian Tomarin -- a guitarist involved with the Kazzer recordings -- conceived Redlight King, then landed a deal with Hollywood Records. Something for Pain, issued in 2011, spawned "Old Man" (sampling Neil Young's song of the same title) and "Bullet in My Hand," singles that registered on Canada's rock and alternative charts as well as on Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, Mainstream Rock, and Alternative Airplay charts. Irons in the Fire arrived as the follow-up in 2013, returning the band to the charts with the singles "Born to Rise," "Times Are Hard," and "Devil's Dance." Redlight King resurfaced in 2020 with Mark Goodwin on drums and Brian Weever on bass -- roles previously filled to varying extents by studio musicians -- and released their third album, Moonshine, that year. Lead song "Lift the Curse" swiftly became one of the band's most popular songs, and a cover of Rush's blue-collar anthem "Working Man" easily fit into their repertoire. Moving from Parts + Labor Records to the German AFM label with Randy Cooke installed as their new drummer, Redlight King recorded their fourth full-length, In Our Blood, and issued it in 2023.
