Notilus

French quintet Notilus play an atmospheric form of electronic jazz that incorporates influences such as dub, drum'n'bass, ambient, and hip-hop. With years of experience between the individual musicians, the group came together and released their rousing, futuristic debut album, Notilus, in 2017. The spontaneous and sophisticated follow-up II appeared in 2023. Notilus initially consisted of Philippe Rieger (electronics), Samuel Klein (drums), Guillaume Nuss (trombone), Christophe Rieger (saxophone), and Paul Barbieri (trumpet/cornet). The bandmembers had previously played in a wide range of rock, jazz, and folk groups, including La Fanfare en Pétard, Ozma, and Lyre le Temps. After performing together at French festivals, Notilus released their self-titled debut on Denovali Recordings in 2017, blending hip-hop and dance elements with cinematic jazz. Far more interested in taking the time to create music they love rather than rushing in order to pump out product, they developed their second album in their rehearsal space. Additionally, Mathieu Goust replaced Klein on drums and percussion. Rawer and more organic than their debut, II appeared in 2023.
