Jackson Greenberg
Hollywood film composer Jackson Greenberg gained wide attention for the theme song he composed for the series Explained. He has also written orchestral and chamber music independently of film and television projects.
Greenberg was born in Philadelphia in 1990 and grew up in the Center City area and in the suburb of Gladwyne. He was musically talented from the beginning, idolized rock star Bruce Springsteen, and was featured as a soloist in all-city youth jazz groups in Philadelphia. Greenberg planned to apply to university jazz performance programs, but a drama teacher noticed his creativity as a composer and asked him to write scores for two plays she was producing. Impressed by the experience, Greenberg switched to composition. He attended Princeton University as an undergraduate, studying with Steve Mackey and Paul Lansky, and also traveling to the Royal College of Music in London as an exchange student. Deciding that he wanted to pursue a career in film music, he moved to Los Angeles after graduating and enrolled at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, entering the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program (now the Screen Scoring program). There, he was assigned pop songwriter and composer Randy Newman as a mentor. Greenberg had further studies with Thomas Newman as a fellow at the Sundance Institute for Film Composition in 2017.
Greenberg made his film composition debut on the 2015 documentary Cartel Land, which was nominated for an Academy Award, and his score earned a Cinema Eye Awards nomination for Best Music for a Feature-Length Documentary the following year; the score was also issued as an album. Those accomplishments brought Greenberg more work, and he has written scores for series on several networks, including the theme song for Explained. Greenberg won a Hollywood Music in Media Award in 2022 for Best Score for a Short Documentary for his music for the film Audible. He also scored Maybe Next Year, a documentary about the Philadelphia Eagles football team's championship run. Greenberg also writes music for orchestra and chamber groups outside the realm of film scores, and his works have been performed by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, among other groups. In 2023, Greenberg issued an album of his own music, The Things We Pass on Through Our Genes, on the CMNTX label.
