Foodman
Foodman is the Westernized recording alias of Japanese experimental electronic producer Takahide Higuchi, who is known in his native country as Shokuhin Maturi ("Food Festival"). Based in Yokohama, his music often resembles a deconstructed take on Chicago's juke/footwork sound, further mutating its frenetic bass and off-kilter, rapid-fire samples. His tracks feature very unconventional rhythms and occasional bursts of noise. His usage of sterile, MIDI-like electronic instruments and sporadic elements of J-pop have drawn comparisons to vaporwave as well as the PC Music label. Following several cassette and digital releases throughout the 2010s, Foodman made his vinyl debut with the well-received Ez Minzoku in 2016.
Foodman first made an impact in 2012, when his tracks circulated throughout the international juke underground, and Orange Milk Records issued his debut cassette, Shokuhin. Soon after, additional tapes appeared on Noumenal Loom, Digitalis, and Patient Sounds Intl., as well as several online releases, including a split EP with SELA. In 2015, Japanese label Melting Bot released Couldwork, a short compilation including tracks from some of Foodman's digital releases. In 2016, Orange Milk issued Foodman's vinyl debut full-length, Ez Minzoku, which included a vocal cameo from Bo Ningen vocalist Taigen Kawabe. Two years later, Foodman's Pokopoko EP appeared on Container's Plastic Bags imprint. This was followed by the full-length Aru Otoko No Densetsu on Sun Araw's Sun Ark label, and the Moriyama EP on the normally reissue-heavy Palto Flats. ODOODO appeared on Mad Decent in 2019.
