Detente
Veteran thrash band Detente were formed in 1984 by vocalist Dawn Crosby and drummer Dennis Butler, eventually cementing into a quintet with the additions of guitarists Caleb Quinn and Ross Robinson and bassist Steve Hochheiser. (Robinson later became a successful producer, perhaps best known for his work with Korn, Sepultura, and Limp Bizkit.) The band recorded demos and worked the L.A. clubs, eventually catching the attention of Roadrunner, who promptly signed Detente and issued their debut album, Recognize No Authority. Released in 1986, the LP made a strong showing in the European markets, especially in Germany and the Netherlands, and was licensed to Metal Blade in the U.S. However, Crosby's volatile behavior, due in large part to an acute substance abuse problem, led to the band getting dropped by Roadrunner. Robinson, Quinn, and Hochheiser left shortly after the debut's release and were replaced by two guitarists, Greg Cekalovich and Mike Carlino, as well as bassist George Robb. Cekalovich and Robb quickly exited the group, however, and Blair Darby was subsequently recruited to play bass.
The revolving door kept spinning as more musicians came and went, and the band's name was soon changed due to legal problems. Out of this quagmire Fear of God were formed, a band that managed to leave a lasting musical impression while elevating the bandmembers' personal dramas to the absolute extreme. Carlino and Crosby split in 1991 after issuing the first Fear of God release, Within the Veil, and a Crosby-led Fear of God (sans Carlino) released Toxic Voodoo in 1994. Crosby eventually fell into a downward spiral of depression and substance abuse, and died of acute liver failure in December of 1996, leaving behind one of metal's more turbulent and tragic legacies. But Detente reunited in 2008 around the core lineup of Caleb Quinn, Dennis Butler, and Steve Hochheiser for a series of shows with Hellion's Ann Boleyn filling in for Crosby. In 2010 they released a brand-new studio album, Decline, with new vocalist Tiina Teal, and embarked on a European tour.
