Billy Mohler

An adventurous bassist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Billy Mohler is known for his own modern creative jazz albums, as well as his genre-bending work as a member of the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex. As a studio and session player, he has worked with an array of artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Nile Rodgers, Liz Phair, Lady Gaga, and others. With Smashing Pumpkins drummer Chamberlin, he has collaborated on 2005's Life Begins Again, 2017's The Parable, and 2020's Honor. He also leads his own group with saxophonist Chris Speed and Kneebody members Shane Endsley (trumpet) and Nate Wood (drums). Together, they released 2019's Focus and 2022's Anatomy. A Southern California native, Mohler studied bass at Boston's Berklee College of Music. He then attended the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at UCLA on full scholarship, studying with luminaries like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Following his time at school, he was a member of the rock group the Calling before launching his fruitful session and production career. Mohler has played on albums by Kelly Clarkson, Jon Brion, Meiko, and Nile Rodgers, and worked on various projects with artists like Lady Gaga, Elle King, Liz Phair. He has also produced albums by Limp Bizkit, Bill Madden, and the Drowning Men, among others. Mohler formed a lasting creative partnership with Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Together, they launched the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex with 2005's Life Begins Again and reunited for 2017's Parable. Along with his session work, he has also composed music for television commercials and ad campaigns. In 2019, Mohler released his debut solo album, Focus, which featured his exploratory jazz group with saxophonist Chris Speed and members of Kneebody, trumpeter Shane Endsley and drummer (and childhood friend) Nate Wood. Also that year, he and Speed again joined forces along with drummer Eric Gardner for Black Friday TRiO. In 2020, he delivered his third collaboration with Chamberlin, Honor. 2022's Anatomy found Mohler again leading his quartet with Speed, Endsley, and Wood.
