Sen Morimoto sits on the porous border of jazz and rap. The Chicago native, a saxophonist by training and a rapper-singer by profession, transports us there with his third crazy solo album. Listening to the first track, Love, Money Part. 2, you might think this is an offbeat, abstract hip-hop project. But make no mistake, Sen Morimoto is a lot more than that. We find sumptuous vocal harmonies on The Things I Thought About You Started To Rhyme and Jupiter (where the artist imagines mankind fleeing to a new planet, escaping from the world’s gloominess). We find noteworthy guests like the amazing NNAMDÏ (Wrecked) and Morimoto’s good friend KAINA (Butterflies). His voice is a little like Mac Miller’s. And the similarities go further than that; both have a taste for the simple things, like on the track Woof where Sen Morimoto’s dog seems to remind him that everything he needs is already right in front of his eyes, in everyday life. Symbols, Token, You Come Around and Goosebumps are all crazy pieces of poetry that add a soft touch to an already brilliant album. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
