And then Nirvana Killed Rock
by Marc Zisman
In 1987, Nirvana was born: the most unexpected punk swerve of the end of the 20th century. A rocketing career, international hits, hordes of fans and a tragic epilogue for this worldwide phenomenon. And what if Kurt Cobain’s band was none other than the last band in the history of rock? The ultimate generational phenomenon of genre, if not its last myth.
Devoted to this ideology of independence, the members of Nirvana became the most popular anti-rock stars of their time, and through no fault of their own. A triumph that put them at the forefront of the alternative rock scene, and most particularly the grunge scene, highlighting at the same time other formations such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam. Three albums later, Nirvana still enjoyed the same notoriety, and their inspiration didn’t run dry, as proved by the album Unplugged In New York live, an acoustic version then, that allowed you to taste the deep power of their compositions in stripped-down versions. Ironic for this trio who were there, first and foremost to make noise…
But exhaustion would get the better of Kurt Cobain who, weary of the audience and the media, interrupted the European tour that was taking place. Shortly after, he was found dead in his home from a bullet to the head, on April 8th, 1994 - seven months after the release of their third and last studio album, In Utero… With this tragic ending at only 27 years old, a career stopped and a myth began for this Ian Curtis of the grunge generation. Nirvana’s popularity hasn’t waned since, with their songs remaining classics of the genre. The tragedy even reinforced the legend surrounding this band adopted by an entire young generation. The Washington Post even ran as a headline: Kurt Cobain, the suicide that spoke to a generation.Unemployment was spreading, AIDS was taking its toll and Nirvana’s singer, at the height of his glory, shoots himself. In short, the skies are anthracite grey… Today, indie rock has become more mainstream than ever. In the early 90s, it wasn’t! Nobody then was dreaming of success, about putting their tracks in TV ads and raking in dollars in the name of rock ‘n’ roll. In the blink of an eye, Nirvana moved from a small label built by friends (Sub Pop) to one of the biggest record labels (Geffen), from the Riverside in Newcastle to headlining Reading festival, from the common fanzine to the cover of Rolling Stone! In 1991, Kurt Cobain tailored his words with precaution about the immediacy of his band’s success: “It isn’t our goal to keep on selling discs. We just want to keep having fun and liking one another. We hope that we can still write good music before it gets on our nerves. If anything threatens this balance, we’ll stop immediately. We can also stop the band for a while, which is fortunately another solution we can contemplate… But we didn’t think our success would be so massive and immediate. I would have to be very pretentious to tell you that I was expecting that… In our lawyer’s office, I saw on the wall a gold record awarded to the hard rock band Poison and I told myself: ‘There’s absolutely, really absolutely no chance, and no reason, that a band like ours can succeed in the mainstream.’ Today, I’m not afraid of this success. It’s just that… I’m afraid it can make this whole enterprise not funny. Impersonal. At the moment, we still enjoy doing it. But who knows?”
The icon Kurt Cobain passed away more than twenty years ago. Would he have become “an old songwriter encrusted in a rocking chair, an acoustic guitar in his hand”, as he liked to imagine himself at the time of retirementm, in the shoes of Leadbelly or Johnny Cash. Who knows… Between 552,236 and 552,237 new rock bands would follow after Nirvana. Yet none would reach such recognition, such status. Because in the middle of the 90s, the feeling of rebellion and the whole mythology it conveyed drifted away from rock ‘n’ roll—which had become more consensual than ever—towards other musical genres, such as hip hop and electro. A revolution that Kurt Cobain would never have imagined…
