After a long career that included a partnership in the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra and a stretch as the drummer for the Ray Brown Trio, Jeff Hamilton finally decided to become a leader himself. This live recording from 1996 features two other talented musicians, pianist Larry Fuller and bassist Lynn Seaton; the music ranges from old standards played with new twists to bop classics. Hamilton's crisp brushwork complements Fuller's piano (at times reminiscent of Oscar Peterson) in "But Not for Me," while the addition of a repetitive vamp sets the stage for a delicious take of "Yesterdays." The core of this CD includes a strutting take of Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing," which begins with Hamilton's driving solo powering the parade, a snappy run through "52nd Street Theme," and an understated "Well, You Needn't," where the baton is repeatedly passed among the members of the trio. Hamilton also displays his skills on the skins with a brilliant solo performance of "A Night in Tunisia." Warmly recommended.
