Hurricane Armstrong changed the trumpet forever. But we sometimes forget that he also had a gale-force voice. This wonderful anthology of recordings from 1945 to 1955 focuses on Louis Armstrong as a singer. Here, Satchmo tackles some of the greatest hits of his time, performed by some excellent orchestras. Across these 42 tracks, Armstrong dazzles and demonstrates his unique knack for taking the least of these songs and making them immortal. An endearing ballad (Maybe It's Because with Sy Oliver's orchestra), a comforting Christmas carol (Christmas in New Orleans with Benny Carter), a swing gem (Snafu) or a great classic (Blueberry Hill with the Gordon Jenkins's orchestra, or La Vie en Rose); everything here is spun to the purest gold by this unique voice. A real treat! © Max Dembo / Qobuz

Impulse! Orange was the New Black

Along with Blue Note and Verve, Impulse! is without doubt one of the best-known American jazz labels. Painted in orange and black, the label not only brought us John Coltrane, but also some of the most adventurous musicians of the 1960s.

Lee Morgan, Breathless

Highs (his recordings) and lows (in his personal life). Lee Morgan was THE greatest trumpeter on the Blue Note label. A career that was brought to a shuddering halt by his ex-wife's gun…

Ray Charles, a Stylist Under the Influence

A founding father of soul, whose career spanned half a century, Ray Charles cannot be reduced to a handful of famous hits. He is above all the master of the high-end musical crossover that makes an art of mixing genres, approaching one to better embrace the other. Ray Charles secularised gospel, enriched the blues, played jazz, sang country and approached rock'n'roll. Let's take a look back at his unique style based on the five listed here.
