It has taken a year for Kanye West to at last bring out Donda. And given its pharaonic appearance, it's easy to see why. The Chicago rapper did not go in for half measures for this, his tenth album: 108 minutes of labyrinthine music where coherence and homogeneity are simply relative artistic values. Kanye West doesn't care about formats. A free-spirited musician who can do whatever he wants, he doesn't have to make choices. He can do anything he pleases. So this album under the aegis of his mother, Donda West, whose voice and spirit haunt the tracklist, is filled with sensational featurings, like those of Jay-Z on the dark Jail, The Weeknd and Lil Baby on the lunar Hurricane, Fivio Foreign and Playboi Carti on the monstrous Off the Grid and also Young Thug on Remote Control. The face of God, which shaped his previous album Jesus Is King, is still omnipresent and a source of ambiguity. Who is the more divine? Kanye or God himself? Donda handles opposites, sees its author contradicting himself, constantly questioning himself, challenging himself with his permanent artistic revolution. It has taken a year for Kanye West to at last bring out Donda. And given its pharaonic appearance, it's easy to see why. The Chicago rapper did not go in for half measures for this, his tenth album: 108 minutes of labyrinthine music where coherence and homogeneity are simply relative artistic values. Kanye West doesn't care about formats. A free-spirited musician who can do whatever he wants, he doesn't have to make choices. He can do anything he pleases. So this album under the aegis of his mother, Donda West, whose voice and spirit haunt the tracklist, is filled with sensational featurings, like those of Jay-Z on the dark Jail, The Weeknd and Lil Baby on the lunar Hurricane, Fivio Foreign and Playboi Carti on the monstrous Off the Grid and also Young Thug on Remote Control.
