Formed in the early 1980s by Gordon Gano (vocals, guitar) and Brian Ritchie (bass), the band quickly established themselves as a cornerstone of the underground folk-punk scene. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1983, became a cult classic, with generation defining tracks like "Blister in the Sun," "Kiss Off," and "Add It Up.” The record went platinum and remains to be their greatest success. With Hallowed Ground, their second release, the group explored more country-influenced sounds and delved into religious themes, further expanding their musical range. Over the years, their influence has spread far and wide, inspiring folk rock, indie, grunge, pop punk, and emo artists alike. Despite internal tensions — including a 2007 lawsuit between Gano and Ritchie — the band’s legacy has endured, with their ten studio albums continuing to fuel new generations of musicians.
