When the DMX tsunami swept across the planet at the very end of the 1990s, hip-hop was at a turning point in its short life. The masters of the golden age (1986/1996) were beginning to lose their influence, the stars were more or less killing each other (RIP Tupac / RIP Notorious B.I.G.) and the charts were being taken over by new, much more blinged-out MCs, led by Puff Daddy. Above all, rap was everywhere! In advertising, films, TV and fashion. This art form, which was originally totally underground, became the norm and this shift annoyed Earl Simmons alias DMX.
This New Yorker, spotted by the emblematic label Def Jam, wanted to bring back the dark, violent and aggressive side of the genre. Carried by his inimitable flow, a kind of ultra-raucous vocal rage recognizable among thousands, his often hardcore punchlines spoke of death, hell and inner demons from his first album, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, released on May 12, 1998. It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, as the website Pitchfork called it, is the "Dante's Inferno of hip-hop". The public rallied behind the album and sent the four singles Get at Me Dog, Stop Being Greedy, Ruff Ryders Anthem and How's It Goin' Down to the top of the charts.
DMX's personality was such that Hollywood did not miss his charisma, and his name was soon to be found on the poster of numerous films and series (Belly, Romeo Must Die, Eve, Out of Bounds, On Probation, New York 911, Never Die Alone, Last Hour...). Throughout his life, he regularly returned to prison - more than thirty times! - for activities as diverse as robbery, drunk driving, drug possession, tax evasion, cruelty to animals, parole violations and disguising himself as a federal agent!
DMX suffered a heart attack on April 2, 2021 after an overdose and died seven days later in a hospital in White Plains, New York. He was 50 years old.
