Taking part in the festivities honouring Ravel’s 150th birthday, Bertrand Chamayou gives us the opportunity to hear some of the musician's lesser-known works, or, more specifically, a selection of fragments (hence the album title). Just over ten years ago, the Toulouse-born pianist set out to record Ravel’s complete piano works, an ambitious task given the complexity of the composer’s catalogue. These infamous fragments that make up this new album had been left out of the pianist’s original compilation, for instance minor works from his early career, with some even dating back to his school years. Other pieces that weren't featured on his previous recording but make an appearance here include transcriptions of Daphnis et Chloé and La Valse, often misunderstood to be mere drafts of the final works. Bertrand Chamayou breathes new life into each piece, teasing out another side of Ravel, one not too far off the one we already know. This rendition offers further insight into the composer’s life and the musical heritage he left behind, which will forever earn our deepest admiration. © Juan Barrios/Qobuz
