This work by composer Christopher Young is not a score for the 2024 film Nosferatu nor for any other contemporary version of the tale based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, but rather one for the original 1922 German silent film Nosferatu, directed by F.W. Murnau. For Young, who has scored such literary fare as The Shipping News (2001), the project perhaps represented a return to his horror roots in such classics as Nightmare on Elm Street 2 in the 1980s. But he has had a lot of experience in the interim to draw on, and the score is a good deal richer and more evocative than it would have been back then. Hear his use of the organ at many points, which both refers to the project's origins in silent film and adds a great many eerie colors to Young's musical palette. Organist Saya Hashino rightly receives a credit for the playing here. The amount of purely orchestral detail is also impressive, and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under conductor Frank Strobel is equal to it. Hear the chilling quality of the "Captain's Demise" segment in Episode Three of Act III. It is indeed good to see the increased attention being given to film music by various orchestral ensembles these days, but there's even more that can be done. Young's score was premiered in Zurich along with a showing of the original film, and with many other orchestras now experimenting with the live accompaniment of silent films, they could hardly do better than to perform Young's score on-site. This album made classical best-seller charts in the autumn of 2024.
