Australian singer Jordan Rakei’s fifth album marks his departure from Ninja Tune – the label behind his past three releases between 2016 and 2019 – and his arrival at Decca. This change in home base brings with it a host of aesthetic changes as well. We’re now met with an artist free from his complexes, the obstacles that prevented him from thinking big, from proposing massive harmonies and orchestrations. On The Loop, everything is loud, from the drums that are often draped over breakbeat hip hop melodies (a link with the album title and its loop concept, perhaps?), to its layers of guitars and gigantic choirs that sing about topics and feelings that have universal appeal. Somehow, none of these elements throw things off balance, nothing muffles his voice that, thanks to meticulous production, lovingly melts over arrangements that are all exceptionally subtle. This serene equilibrium opens the doors for expression, allowing Jordan Rakei to effortlessly explore difficult territories. This includes the soul-pop side of the discography of Bill Withers, a singer Rakei idolizes and whose work has fed his own, especially in the conception of this excellent album, an undeniable highlight of his career thus far. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
