The early 21st century has further entrenched Jean Sibelius’s importance in music history. Long admired in the Nordic countries, the UK, and later in the United States, Sibelius is now celebrated unanimously. We no longer bother counting the symphonies, symphonic poems, and violin concertos that have become staples of the canon.
British conductor Nicholas Collon and violinist Christian Tetzlaff bring a touch of originality by pairing the immensely popular Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major with some of Sibelius’s lesser-known works. Composed during the early years of World War I, this masterpiece underwent a long gestation and multiple revisions, evolving significantly to become the version we know today. Leading the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Collon insists on the symphony’s pastoral character; omitting an explicit program to steep in the Finnish landscape and the tense atmosphere of the time. His clear-eyed interpretation highlights the originality and modernity of Sibelius’s musical language. The hymn-like power of the symphony’s final measures rings out like a muted threat with forceful question marks left unanswered in its close.
A completely different world is introduced by violinist Christian Tetzlaff through two “Melodies, Op. 77” ("Cantique" and "Dévotion") and the two “Serenades for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 69,” composed around the same time as the Fifth Symphony. These works act like the pendulum swinging back from Beethoven’s “Romances for Violin and Orchestra.” A violinist himself, Sibelius renews the standard of masterful violin writing, building on the achievements of his famous “Violin Concerto, Op. 47.” The remarkable intensity Tetzlaff brings to these works elevates them well beyond the scope of mere serenades. Also featured is the extremely rare “Svanevit” (“The White Swan”) suite, a condensed version of the music Sibelius composed for Strindberg’s play to the latter’s great pleasure and satisfaction. It is a richly atmospheric score that deserves to be heard far more often in concert settings. © François Hudry/Qobuz Read more
