It took Andris Nelsons nearly ten years to record this enormous compilation of works by Dmitri Shostakovich, leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra in honoring the 50th anniversary of the Soviet composer’s passing. Serving as artistic director of the renowned American institution since 2014, the Latvian conductor has also recently signed on to join the direction of the Tanglewood Music Center, where the orchestra has traditionally held a summer residency.
This album’s extraordinarily comprehensive program includes all 15 of Shostakovich’s symphonies, as well as his concertos (with Yuja Wang on piano, Baiba Skride on violin, and Yo-Yo Ma on cello), several symphonic pieces, and the vitriolic opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, which led to the composer being blacklisted, much to his humiliation. What is most apparent throughout these recordings is the orchestra’s extraordinarily refined interpretation of music that often lacks nuance when performed by others.
Shostakovich’s brilliance allowed him to navigate the loopholes of the Soviet authorities’ injunctions, by which he was often targeted whenever he satirised the country’s elite. He did so as if he were untouchable, and with a sense of parody and derision unique to music, being the only art form that bypasses words and images. Andris Nelsons belongs to a generation born after the composer’s death, which allows him to approach his music from a healthy distance, all while bringing out its universal, timeless qualities. It took Andris Nelsons nearly ten years to record this enormous compilation of works by Dmitri Shostakovich, leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra in honoring the 50th anniversary of the Soviet composer’s passing. Serving as artistic director of the renowned American institution since 2014, the Latvian conductor has also recently signed on to join the direction of the Tanglewood Music Center, where the orchestra has traditionally held a summer residency.
This album’s extraordinarily comprehensive program includes all 15 of Shostakovich’s symphonies, as well as his concertos (with Yuja Wang on piano, Baiba Skride on violin, and Yo-Yo Ma on cello), several symphonic pieces, and the vitriolic opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, which led to the composer being blacklisted, much to his humiliation. What is most apparent throughout these recordings is the orchestra’s extraordinarily refined interpretation of music that often lacks nuance when performed by others.
Shostakovich’s brilliance allowed him to navigate the loopholes of the Soviet authorities’ injunctions, by which he was often targeted whenever he satirised the country’s elite. He did so as if he were untouchable, and with a sense of parody and derision unique to music, being the only art form that bypasses words and images. Andris Nelsons belongs to a generation born after the composer’s death, which allows him to approach his music from a healthy distance, all while bringing out its universal, timeless qualities. Music lovers are sure to discover an all-new interpretation that may well change their own opinions, thanks to the soloists, musicians, singers, and choir whose incomparable dedication to their polished, almost purist vision is solidified under Andris Nelson’s profound and dedicated leadership.
