Sentient is far more than just a Carlos Santana compilation. Of course, the record looks back at key moments in the musician’s career, but he also found it important to add in a few reworked tracks in order to give the record a more cohesive sound. One example is the Smokey Robinson cover “Please Don’t Take Your Love,” whose guitar solos are much more fleshed out compared to those of the original 2009 song. In terms of essential Santana repertoire, the present album features a remastered version of “Let the Guitar Play” (a 2021 reinterpretation of “Song for Cindy”), as well as classics born out of his collaboration with Italian-American pianist Paolo Rustichelli. There’s “Full Moon,” along with “Vers le soleil,” “Get On,” and “Rastafario,” which puts Santana in conversation with both Rustichelli and Miles Davis. Naturally, the record wouldn’t be complete without the 1987 homage to his son Salvador (“Blues for Salvador”). He keeps things in the family with “Coherence,” a previously unreleased rock and roll duet between Carlos and his drummer wife Cindy Blackman Santana. Another previously unreleased track of note: a live instrumental version of Michael Jackson’s “Stranger in Moscow,” where Santana’s guitar adds a touch of soul to this hit by the King of Pop. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Album review
