Clarinetist Martin Fröst is unsurpassed in standard clarinet repertory, but he has also made ambitious concept albums featuring music not originally written for the clarinet. Night Passages is offered as evocations of nocturnal psychological states linked to a severe episode of Menière's disease suffered by Fröst. The music careens from the Baroque to jazz, Richard Rogers, and a traditional polska, and it is varied enough that one wonders what can possibly be holding it together. Putatively, the program is divided into six "Passages," entitled "Scarlatti," "Imagination," "Miles Davis," "Rameau," "Dorotea Polska," and "Benny Goodman," linked to Fröst's memories and thoughts. In fact, these do not do much to make the program fall into place, but as one proceeds, one realizes it does not really matter. Fröst's mastery is so complete that his playing ties the whole thing together. Listen to the transition from the Bach Sinfonia No. 5, BWV 791, to Chick Corea's Armando's Rhumba; in anyone else's hands, it would be a lurch, but Fröst has the precision and aplomb to make it work. One must note, in fact, that his fusion of classical music and jazz is an unusually deep one, going beyond the usual affinities of harmonic rhythm or "chord changes" into melodic realms. Fröst receives sympathetic support from pianist Roland Pöntinen and double bassist Sébastien Dubé in this fully realized adventure through the mind.
