The aura surrounding Jordan Carter is a mysterious one, because he's not just your typical beats-first rapper. But Carter is a genuine superstar, performing at the Grammys alongside more decipherable A-listers like the Weeknd and the currently unbeatable Kendrick Lamar, who features here. And not only that; to a huge swath of young rap fans in the 2020s, Carti is the voice of their generation, the pioneer of rage-rap. His influence is felt in many quarters, but especially cross-sections of DIY artists applying liberal smears of distortion to their sound—and their extremely online fans.
Depending on where you're standing, it's either a surprise or completely inevitable that Carti's long-awaited third album (fourth to those of us who consider 2017's self-titled debut "mixtape" his best) is his most conventional. It's a throwback "event" record of 30 songs in 76 minutes rather than his acolytes' usual blur of TikTok-sized nuggets. Music is full of top-shelf guests and sonics from every stage of his career: incredible opener "POP OUT" screeches like a dentist drill compared to even the noisiest tracks on Whole Lotta Red but it's followed by a Kanye-esque gospel choir on "CRUSH." There's also a strong Ye influence in the choppy soul sample of the beautiful "BACKD00R," on which Kendrick drops by just to sing, while "RADAR" jumps back in time to prime Lex Luger circa 2010. Carti's own dead-on Future impression tag-teams with the real Future all over the place.
Music's spectrum is completely summarized when Carti follows the jammed-circuit noise of "COCAINE NOSE" with an outlier on the opposite end, the soulful "WE ALL NEED DA VIBES," which betrays no hint of the curator or guest Young Thug's known weirdness. It's fitting that the cover declares "I Am Music," because Carti is like a sentient conduit of event-rap itself—distorting through a semi-blown speaker, of course. © Daniel Aaron/Qobuz
