Thanks to a Swiss foundation that supports young talented artists, violinist David Castro-Balbi and pianist Teo Gheorghiu were able to record this Mozart album with the renowned Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg, conducted by Howard Griffiths. The Swiss-Canadian pianist gained recognition through several international competitions that paved the way for his concert career. As for the violinist meanwhile, he studied at the CNSMD in Paris, and also performs chamber music in a trio with his brother on the cello and French pianist Lucas Debargue.

Renowned for their deep sensitivity and understanding of Mozart's style, the two soloists have chosen works from his early years, including Piano Concerto No. 3 in D major, K. 40, whose three movements are actually arrangements of earlier works by other composers, completed with cadenzas written by an 11-year-old Mozart, and presented as his own composition by his father. Written later, the Concerto No. 14 in E-flat major, K. 449 is the first work Mozart entered into the catalog of his own compositions, a record he maintained throughout his life. Although less frequently performed than his later, more famous concertos, this concerto is often considered the starting point of the prestigious series of piano concertos that would go on to solidify his legacy. Like many of his piano concertos, Violin Concerto No. 3 in A major, K. 219 was composed for his own performances. Rooted in the elegant ‘galant’ style prevalent in Salzburg at the time, the concerto already showcases Mozart’s unmistakable brilliance, with every note infused with his signature genius. © François Hudry/Qobuz
