Finland has undoubtedly become the world's nursery for conductors. Following the great elders, such as Kajanus, Salonen and Saraste, and the many others who enrich music and musical tradition around the world, such as Mikko Franck, Rouvali, Ollikainen, Stasevska, Sorensen and Mäkelä, a new prodigy has made an appearance, albeit born in 2000, with a yet adolescent face. Tarmo Peltokoski, born of a Filipino mother and a Finnish father, was appointed at the tender age of 22 to head the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse; a post he will take up in September 2024. Before seeing and hearing him at work, here is a taster with his album of Mozart symphonies, brought to us by DG’s famous yellow label. At the head of Bremen's Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, which he shamelessly upsets, the young man offers us works composed by Mozart at around the same age as his; the Salzburg genius was 26 when he completed his famous ‘Symphony, No. 35 in D major, K. 385 “Haffner“’. Tarmo Peltokoski conducts the symphony at full throttle, not hesitating to embellish certain parts with additions of his own. In this age of purists, this makes for a rather cheeky gesture, but, we can say without hesitation, a very successful one. As for the extreme tempi, it bears remembering that they were never fast enough for Mozart. The molto allegro from the ‘Fortieth Symphony in G minor, K. 550’, comes into its own here, straight out of one of Cherubino's arias in The Marriage of Figaro. The andante that follows is just as spirited, before a one-beat minuetto with invigorating elasticity slings the piece into a sparkling finale. The same treatment is given to the luminous ‘Symphony No. 36 in C major, K.425 “Linz”’, by this lively conductor. It makes you think that Mozart must be smiling all the way up there, in musician paradise. Himself a composer, Peltokoski offers his own piano ‘Improvisations’ at the end of each of the three works presented on the album. His insolent and provocative talent shines through his admiration for Mozart expressed and transformed in different ways, such as the irresistible tango on the themes of the Linz symphony, proving, if proof were needed, how close and indispensable Mozart is to us still.
