Recorded in 2023 on Pentatone in the generous acoustics of Geneva’s legendary Victoria Hall after a series of concerts held there, this album reunites an entire family: conductor Kent Nagano, his wife, their daughter, and his sister-in-law, all three of them talented pianists. In spite of their extensive discography, first on the Odéon label and later with Decca in the 1940’s, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande has recorded surprisingly few works by Mozart and Francis Poulenc.

When you’re aware of the kinship that Poulenc proclaimed to feel toward Mozart (which is especially evident in the slow movement of the former’s Concerto for Two Pianos), you can’t help but rejoice at this brilliant pairing that unites the two composers. Rarely played in concert for obvious financial and logistic reasons, Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Concerto for Three Pianos is thick with joy and vigor on this recording where a deep, mutual listening creates an effortless stylistic unity between the three closely-knit pianists.

The two Kodama sisters rival each other in animation and imagination on the Concerto for Two Pianos, composed by Poulenc alongside Jacques Février in 1932 as a commission from Princess Edmond de Polignac for a festival in Venice. It’s a pivotal work that still features some of the young Poulenc’s playful musical flourishes, all while serving as a sort of omen to the gravity that the events of his life would go on to accentuate. Marrying poetry and audacity, the Nagano family offers a version of this work that is worthy of being placed at the very summit of their well-rounded discography. © François Hudry/Qobuz
