Hitting record stores in July of 1982, Mirage was Fleetwood Mac’s thirteenth studio album, and the fourth by their most well-known line-up of Stevie Nicks, Christine and John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Mick Fleetwood. The sales of their prior release Tusk (1981), in spite of the album’s high production costs, had fallen far below expectations. This led the English-American group to return to a more straightforward sound, seeking to match the success of Rumours. Although Mirage had its own hits, it was clear: the quintet’s golden age was slowly coming to an end. Stevie Nicks had already begun her solo career with Bella Donna, which was a wild success. Same goes for Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham. September 1st of that same year, the quintet embarked on a short American tour of 29 cities in two months (compared to Tusk’s 112 dates).
Mirage Tour ‘82 was recorded at The Forum in Inglewood, near Los Angeles, during two sold-out shows on the 21st and 22nd of October, at the end of the tour. Although the majority of the tracks had already been released throughout the years on video (Mirage Live, 1983) and as Deluxe versions (Mirage Super Deluxe), the live album contains six previously unreleased tracks: the iconic “Don’t Stop,” the festive blues of “Oh Well,” written by Peter Green in 1969, “Dreams” and “Sara” on slightly dated keyboards, and deeply moving acoustic versions of “Never Going Back Again” and “Landslide,” all of which feature nearly flawless sound quality.
Along with Buckingham’s blazing hot guitar solos, Stevie Nicks is what makes this live compilation, her stirring performances (three of them previously unreleased) deserve the highest praise. Her husky voice seems affected by her drug use, as well as the brutal loss of her childhood friend Robin Anderson, taken by Leukaemia just days prior on October 5th, when she was six months pregnant. Christine McVie’s heartfelt farewell after “Rhiannon,” and Nicks dedicating “Landslide” to Claire, the director of The Forum, add so much emotion to an already electrifying album.
