With In Darkness Through the Light, Marina Viotti takes us on a journey through time. It all started in 2017 when she stumbled across John Dowland’s Renaissance songs for lute and voice. She had yet to discover this genre; despite the mezzo-soprano’s adventurous musical spirit. A project intended for concert led her to choose several of Dowland’s melodies, giving them a fresh twist with modern arrangements, thanks to Vincent Flückiger on the lute and Fred Chappuis on the electronics (think the mellotron, Moog keyboards, and Revox). The result is pure magic; these centuries-old pieces feel like they could have been written yesterday. They’re paired with songs from contemporary artists like Björk, U2, Johnny Cash, Metallica, and Neil Young, as Viotti weaves in some heartfelt reflections on death, the passage of time, regret, and illusion. This hits much harder when Marina shares a snippet from her personal diary in the album’s lyrics, revealing this record reflects her private battle with cancer that she faced quietly from 2019 to 2024. From the lute to Viotti’s voice, and the Moog to the electric guitars, we are transported to a beautiful musical landscape, full of light and shadow, that resonates deeply with the human experience of grief and resilience. It’s rare for a concept album to pull on the heart strings like this. Look out for the tracks “Faiwell, Too Fair” (Dowland), “Nothing Else Matters” (Metallica), and “Born to Die” (Lana Del Rey); the highlight moments, as selected by our editorial team. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
