Gustav Holst's cosmic tone poem The Planets has had several additions by other composers over the years; Pluto, whatever its ultimate status, got a piece, "The Renewer," from Colin Matthews, and a group of "Asteroids" were produced some years ago at the behest of Simon Rattle. Yet Earth itself has never received similar treatment, until now! The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has commissioned several pieces from Aboriginal composer Deborah Cheetham Fraillon, but she is not much known outside Australia. Here, she rounds out Holst's cycle with Earth, for which she also sings her own text, a suitably awestruck paean to our home planet. The piece has a nice personal quality, but what is most impressive about it is that Cheetham Fraillon has delivered on the orchestra's request for a piece that would work with The Planets. It begins with a good general approximation of Holst's idiom, broadening out into a more tonal and somewhat sentimental finale. This adds a new dynamic to the Holst work, and to pull that off successfully is quite a trick. The performance of The Planets itself under conductor Jaime Martín is fine; there have been more threatening portrayals of "Mars, the Bringer of War," but the new addition is the main news here, and orchestras outside Australia might benefit from listening to it and presenting it. The orchestra's in-house engineering team gets excellent live sound from Southbank Centre in Melbourne, picking up Holst's subtler harp effects, and there is a good edge to the whole performance.
