Sometimes nicknamed the "Russian Quartets," Haydn’s Six Quartets, Op. 33 had a decisive influence on both Mozart and the young Beethoven’s string quartets. Their formal perfection, expressive depth, and occasional folksy character (that never impinges on sophistication) make them landmark works in the history of a genre that engendered countless masterpieces throughout the 20th century. In each of these quartets, Haydn replaces the traditional minuet with a scherzo; a term and form that would later become a hallmark of Beethoven’s style.
Published with great success by several editors under various, sometimes fanciful names to attract buyers, they were notably released as the Jungfernquartette (Maiden Quartets). A particularly fitting title for this 2024 recording by the Chiaroscuro Quartet, an all-female ensemble performing on period instruments with historically informed techniques.
This new volume, dedicated to Quartets Nos. 4 to 6, completes the first half of the set, which was recorded in 2021 and released in 2023. It displays the same qualities that had already won over the critics: great refinement combined with a newly realized expressive power, hovering between abstraction and embodiment that so astonished listeners in the late 18th century. © François Hudry/Qobuz
