A companion piece to the Foo Fighters-starring horror comedy film of the same name, Dream Widow sees Dave Grohl living out his heavy metal fantasies via a surprisingly potent eight-song set that touches on everything from classic thrash to blazing prog and bruising stoner metal. In a nod to the first Foo Fighters effort, Grohl handles nearly every part, with Foo keyboardist Rami Jaffee, keyboardist Oliver Roman, and guitarist Jim Rota offering up a few assists. The resulting clamor falls somewhere between early Metallica's unrepentant attack, Motörhead's punk-metal enthusiasm, and the satirical melodic death metal of Dethklok. It's all in good fun, but the sheer mayhem at the heart of standout cuts like "The Sweet Abyss," "Cold," and "March of the Insane" makes it sound like Grohl was out to prove a point as much as he was looking to entertain.
