After a pair of collaborative albums with the Alchemist and Cardo, Larry June returns with Doing It for Me, his first proper solo album since 2022's breakout Spaceships on the Blade. June's famously low-key delivery is supported by some stellar production from Harry Fraud, DJ Khalil, Jake One, Cookin' Soul, and several others. While it may be guest-heavy behind the board, there are no vocal features aside from the rapper's Uncle Herm, whose charming preamble starts the record. On mike, June relies as always on his instincts, populating the 15 tracks with a litany of everyday concerns, chores, errands, and brags, not unlike much of his previous output. In this way, he's essentially doing what comes naturally to him. Where Doing It for Me stands out is in its rich musical landscape of comfy funk samples, enveloping beats, and diverse palette. It's more melodic than his usual work with forays into R&B balladry like "Stinson Beach" and "Breakfast in Gold Coast." It would be nice to hear June step up his lyrical content to match, but growth is still growth, and the familiar world he delivers certainly doesn't diminish the wealth of strong production.
