Donna Summer, the queen of 70s disco, gradually started distancing herself from the genre when she signed with Geffen Records in 1980. Cats Without Claws (1984) is the singer’s third album for the label, and the artistic direction is clear: with producer Michael Omartian by her side, Donna Summer dove head first into the classically mid-80s style of synthpop. The singer still lit up the dance floor, but was backed by more percussive and colorful orchestrations, like on the single “Supernatural Love.” She also remained loyal to the dramatic side that had made her disco hits so successful, as was the case for “Love to Love You Baby,” written by the Moroder/Bellotte duo in 1975. In this light, we can appreciate her intense speak-singing on “Eyes” and “Cats Without Claws,” the bursts of piano on “Forgive Me,” and the somber arpeggios on “Maybe It’s Over.” She also covered the classic “There Goes My Baby,” originally released by The Drifters in 1959. To celebrate 40 years since the release of Cats Without Claws, Driven By Music presents us with a version featuring five remixes, including one by Steve Anderson. Other highlights include the extended versions of “Eyes” and “Forgive Me,” as well as the track “Face The Music,” which didn’t appear on the original album. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
