Michigan rapper and online content creator DDG came up with an inventive way to stoke interest for his fourth studio album Blame the Chat. He documented the creation of the album from start to finish in a series of livestream events, inviting fans not just to tune in for a closer look at the recording process, but to also offer their opinions on the choices he was making as the record took shape. While it's unclear how much this model affected the final product of Blame the Chat, the end result is a lean and varied collection of tracks that change stylistic gears often, with a bevy of big-name guests. DDG gets into high-energy pop-trap on the synthy, BIA-assisted "fine shyt." There's a sung R&B ambience on "in my zone," house-inflected rhythms on "man on a mission," and charged, aggressive street rap power on album standout "gta," a song where guest artist Skilla Baby shines. Blame the Chat has an extensive guest list of recognizable names. Wiz Khalifa plays to his strengths on the hazy, pop-friendly "lemonade," DaBaby contributes a verse to "motion," and "more than a night" features Rob49, Queen Naija, and Shenseea adding melodic hooks and laid-back rap flows to the song's minimal dancehall beat.
