Some fifty years ago, Beethoven's Triple Concerto was still largely considered a curiosity, and recordings of it were very rare. The legendary recording conducted by Karajan, though very grandiloquent with Oïstrakh, Rostropovitch and Richter somewhat drowned out by the Berlin Philharmonic, was the international revelation of this previously unloved work. Recorded in 1969, it was often interpreted from a political angle as a veritable symbol of the thawing of the Cold War. This did much to boost the work’s popularity, and it has since been widely included in the conventional repertoire. As in the past, this new album brings together today’s young stars, but without having any of them hog the limelight. On the contrary, an enchanting and an extraordinary atmosphere of ease, where the artists clearly listen to each other and share a desire to make music and have fun together, prevails. Three superb soloists, Benjamin Grosvenor on piano, Nicola Benedetti on violin and Sheku Kanneh-Mason on cello, rival each other in their joie de vivre and sophistication of sound under the direction of the brilliant and highly gifted Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, hand firmly placed on the helm of a Philharmonia Orchestra at its best. The immensely pleasurable listening afforded by this playful interpretation, sure to set imaginations alight, is extended by a selection of extracts from Scottish, Welsh and Irish songs and volkslieder harmonized by Beethoven, played in trio by the three soloists.
