Taking 2022's short EP [Message from the Clergy] one step further, Ghost released the expertly curated compilation 13 Commandments to close out their whirlwind 2023, a year that included an international tour, multiple Grammy nominations, and much more. In addition to catalog standards such as Infestissumam's "Year Zero," Meliora's "Cirice," and Prequelle's "Rats," this collection goes beyond the official LPs, providing a wider view of the band's thematic scope and melodic power. "Square Hammer," "If You Have Ghosts," and the Grammy-nominated cover of Iron Maiden's "Phantom of the Opera" show that the group's EPs are just as vital as their full-lengths, while the platinum-certified surprise viral smash "Mary on a Cross" proves that Tobias Forge and company can even score a hit with just a B-side. While these 13 tracks had been racking up hundreds of millions of streams before the compilation even came out, 13 Commandments was notable upon release for including the piano-kissed epic "Zenith," a Meliora-era rarity that had previously only been available on physical deluxe releases. Longtime fans will surely have a list of personal favorites that weren't included here, but as a document of "Ghost circa 2023," 13 Commandments is an excellent introduction to the band's catalog -- 13 lucky years into their existence -- that barely scratches the surface of what devious delights lurk in the rest of their expansive arsenal.
