People

Though the members of the Brooklyn-based avant-rock trio People are all highly accomplished musicians, their recordings present a skewed take on conventional pop melodies that might remind some listeners of the work of untutored outsider combos such as the Shaggs and Half Japanese. The group is led by Mary Halvorson, a veteran of Anthony Braxton’s Diamond Curtain Trio, and though her deliberately fractured compositions for People bear little resemblance to that group's electro-saturated abstractions, one can hear traces of Braxton’s unorthodox compositional strategies on many of People’s less structured numbers. People released their self-titled debut on the small New York imprint I & Ear in 2005, and followed it with 2007’s MISBEGOTTEN MAN.
