Interplanetary Criminal
Manchester's Interplanetary Criminal produces tracks reflecting the influence of a wide range of U.K. dance styles, from dark-hued breakbeats to bouncy garage. First appearing with lo-fi house EPs such as 2017's Intergalactic Jack, he soon released jungle-influenced records like 2019's Sleepwalker while paying tribute to speed garage with 2022's Coming on Strong and other releases. Interplanetary Criminal received unexpected mainstream exposure when he produced Eliza Rose's 2022 track "B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)," which topped the charts in the U.K. and Ireland.
Zachary Bruce first started making music as Interplanetary Criminal around 2012, when he was starting to attend university. He'd moved from his native Manchester to Leeds, and was heavily inspired by the outsider house scene and labels like L.I.E.S. He moved back to Manchester in 2016 and became re-inspired by the U.K. bass sounds he'd grown up listening to, such as jungle and garage. Two house EPs, Intergalactic Jack (E-Beamz) and Out of Body (Kalahari Oyster Cult), came out in 2017, and Seagrave released the multi-genre cassette Get Money in 2018. Two EPs released in 2019, Confused (Dansu Discs) and Move Tools (Banoffee Pies), contained garage and 2-step tracks, while Sleepwalker (Sneaker Social Club) focused on breakbeat tracks. In 2020, Interplanetary Criminal began releasing EPs on Shall Not Fade's Timeisnow sublabel, starting with Nobody and Darkside. He also began releasing music with Adam Emil (Main Phase) as the duo ATW, and appeared on the Warehouse Rave label with Warehouse Romance. 2021 brought In My Arms and Ruff EP (with DJ Cosworth) on Timeisnow, as well as Dangerous on U.K. label Instinct. A second ATW record and the debut 12" by Ruff Kru (Bruce and Emil along with Cosworth) appeared in 2022.
"B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)," Interplanetary Criminal's collaboration with DJ and vocalist Eliza Rose, first appeared on her Rosebud Recordings in June of 2022. Sampling Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's "Let the Beat Hit 'Em," the song became a hit at the year's Glastonbury Festival, then went viral on TikTok, and was licensed by Warner Records, who re-released it in August. It then climbed up the charts, and became the 1,400th U.K. number one single, additionally spending six weeks at the top in Ireland and earning platinum certifications in the U.K. and Australia. Following the track's release, Interplanetary Criminal released an untitled 10" single with Cosworth on Hot Haus Records, and Coming on Strong EP on Timeisnow.
